Processes, Content and Goals
The SACC mobilised a small group of interested students and they met with the teacher to explore what they wanted to do with the garden plot as well as to negotiate the mix of ‘hands on gardening’ and theory about plants, permaculture, sustainability and nutrition. The goals of the program include learning new skills, accessing affordable healthy food, engaging with the school community and reducing social isolation by participating in a rewarding activity.

The content evolves from the seasonal demands of the garden and student’s interests. Goals are set and renegotiated as the garden or the weather demands.
Students have the opportunity to take individual responsibility for activities such as seed raising but also work collectively to carry out tasks. Where appropriate responsibility is devolved to the group to plan for and maintain the garden over periods such as school holidays. Students have visited another Padstow Outreach class at the Riverwood community garden to extend their knowledge of community gardens.
