Padstow TAFE Outreach has been involved with the Schools as Community Centres (SACC) coordinator at Lakemba Public School developing programs to engage socially and economically disadvantaged members of the local school community in educational programs. Over past years programs have been run in ESOL, Computing and grass roots leadership skills to give people opportunities to develop educational pathways or to engage with their school and local community. This program gives women an opportunity to extend their learning beyond these traditional access programs.
The school had underutilised garden beds that were surplus to school activity. The principal offered these to the Schools as Community Centre Coordinator for possible inclusion in programs she was facilitating for parents. Healthy lifestyle is a priority in the SACC’s programs so the idea was to build on this in a ‘hands on’ way.
The program has outgrown the original garden bed so the Principal approved expanding the number of beds and this was recently undertaken by a group of corporate volunteers. The bigger footprint in turn has led to increasing enrolments as more people see the productive beds and become aware of the project.
